Dear Coney Island

September 8, 2009

Have you seen ‘Little Fugitive‘? It’s a wonderful film made in 1953 where a little kid runs off to Coney Island because he thought he’d killed his brother. Way before it became a style associated with the documentary films of Maysles Bros. and D.A Pennebaker, LF  was shot hand-held. And years before it became normal to cast non-actors in leading roles, LF did that. Style aside, the film captured a side of Brooklyn and Coney Island you won’t see anywhere. Netflix it!

I gather some day Coney Island will turn into a G-rated Las Vegas. I don’t know about you but the spirit of Coney Island is in the way it has maintained to stay  smack in-between the old and the new. Makes sense?

I’ve only been there twice this summer. Once on the Mermaid Parade day, and then about a week ago. I thought I’d start with the end and go back, show you the quiet Coney Island first and then take you through the parade pictures. I like both. The first image is at the Ringling Bros. Circus tent. The last image, to me, symbolizes looking forward to next season.

Ah, didn’t know that about BofA customers getting in free. Gotta do that. Thanks!

That’s awesome! I went so many times last summer – every weekend for the beach and occasional Nathan’s hot dog. This past summer I only went two times – once for the beach on 4th of July and once to visit the New York Aquarium. Bank of America customers get in free on the first Saturdays of the month.
