NYfty50: Roosevelt Island Tramway

March 2, 2010

When I learned that the Tramway would be replaced with shiny new ones I had to take a final ride. Coincidentally, the Tramway was born the same year I was and is shutting down on my birthday – well, technically, it’s March 1st at 2:00am. I’d been to Roosevelt Island for the first time in 2007 and again this past year. The 5 minute ride across the East River never ceased to amaze me.
Anyway, the classic Tramway line and cars are gone. They are, however, immortalized by the first Spiderman movie (a 1/8 scale model was used), and by countless fans from around the world in photos and videos. I just wanted to be a part of that.

You captured this historic ride so beautifully, Emon Hassan. I don’t know if I love your camera or your talent more… I guess it is a combination of both. Wonderful. The video is extraordinary. Thank you. I am smiling.
