iPhone: Visiting Ellis Island

October 11, 2009

I rarely get excited when visiting places. But this one trip to Ellis Island, my first, was out of this world because a small group of us got to see the south part of the island otherwise closed to the public. I cannot begin to tell you what it is like to be walking the halls, standing in the middle of rooms, and touching the remains of what has been the site of a momentous few decades of Immigration in America. For a history buff like me being amidst all that was heaven! Our guide, Kim, took us on a journey through halls and corridors of the abandoned hospital and her in-depth knowledge of the place made the experience many times better. All these years I’ve been seeing pictures of the ruins of Ellis Island and other historic sites in magazines, on television, and other photographers. So this has definitely been a dream come true. I guess waiting 14 years and having my kick-fucking-ass camera to make this first visit couldn’t have been more perfect. I’d go back tonight if I had a chance.

I took some 400 plus photos yesterday and hope to edit and post them soon (still have Sandy Hook stuff to finish). Can. Not. Wait. These pics you see here are shot with iPhone on the way and on our return. Because they just look cool.
