A Little Out of the Box & Backwards

May 19, 2009

Had been debating for a while about how I should design this site. Traditionally, photography portfolio sites have a series of photos neatly put in categories that don’t hurt someone’s brain too much. Recently portfolio sites add on a blog and pretty much leave it there.

Before I launched this site, I thought long and hard about why I should. Who am I? What have I done? And why do I think I have what it takes? What type of a photographer am I? What should my portfolio say about me? Can I even compete in this marketplace, especially in New York, where photographers can have you for breakfast with their might, technique, and clout?

Then it dawned on me. I was thinking like ‘them’ and not being me. When I’d launched my guitar blog last year, none of the questions above even occurred to me. I simply didn’t care what was out there, who was out there doing it, and how many. I simply launched the blog because I loved guitar and I was unhappy with what I didn’t see out there. So why should this bother me so much? I am more confident as a photographer for having my own style than I ever was as a guitar player.

Therefore, I’m saying bye bye to the idea of a traditional portfolio (owe this decision a good deal to this Chase Jarvis post) and am establishing this as a photo blog. However, I don’t want to talk about photography unless absolutely necessary. I’ll simply post photos as much as I can and in every category I can. I’ve never intended to become a photographer who specializes in one or two categories. I’m not cut out that way.

This is, in the end, a presentation of my work and my style, the way I see life’s many stories for you out there to see. I’d love to make a living doing photography. I tend to say things better with images, than words.

Hopefully, this will be my longest post with words. I gots to get to work now.

Latah!
